AI Series #1 – AI regulation – The Underlying Principles

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into various aspects of daily life, the need for AI laws and regulations have increased.  Recently, the European Parliament adopted the EU AI Act as the world’s first comprehensive law regulating AI.

The process of regulating AI however started much earlier when, in 2019, the OECD developed and adopted a set of principles to guide the regulation of AI.  These principles provide a comprehensive framework for policymakers, industry stakeholders and researchers to navigate the complex landscape of AI governance.  The principles are:

Robustness, Security and Safety

Calls for the creation of AI technologies that are reliable, secure from external threats, and safe for users.

Accountability

Emphasizes the importance of establishing clear responsibilities for AI developers and operators to ensure accountability.

Principle 2.1

Investing in AI research and development

Supports the advancement of AI through dedicated research and innovation.

Principle 2.2

Fostering a digital ecosystem for AI

Aims to create a supportive environment for AI technologies to flourish.

Principle 2.3

Shaping an enabling policy environment for AI

Encourages the development of policies that support AI innovation while addressing ethical and societal concerns.

Prepares the workforce for the changes AI will bring to the job market.

Promotes collaboration across borders to ensure that AI development adheres to universally accepted ethical standards.
